Data Engineer

Job description

What is Snoop?

Snoop is a new kind of platform – powered by Open Banking – that helps consumers win in the daily fight to get good value from the businesses they deal with.

Consumers don’t have time to check how they’re spending their money every 5 minutes. But Snoop does – Snoop does it all day and is brilliant at it.

Snoop performs three key tasks for its customers:

  1. Keeps an eye on their bills to make sure they aren’t being ripped off
  2. Scours the internet to find ways for them to save money on the things they already buy
  3. Shows them all their bank accounts in one place, making the process of managing money super-simple.

Snoop’s only goal is to help everyone spend, save and live smarter.

Snoop is being built in London and Norwich and launched in April 2020.

With a passion for technology and design as well as belief in what Snoop is setting out to achieve, we’re looking for a brilliant powerhouse of a data engineer to join the team.

You’ll be energetic, driven, super smart and a great problem solver with a knack of being able to communicate outcomes clearly to those who are not in the technical detail. Critically you’ll also have an unreasonably high standard for what is good enough.

Having a minimum of 3 years’ hands-on fresh experience of professional software development in any industry, you will be integral to the build of Snoop’s ambitious and progressive analytics and AI platform.

As a key member of data engineering team you will be developing Snoop's enterprise grade platform with security, privacy, scalability and resilience baked into the DNA of the architecture. We are building a modern serverless microservices architecture with embedded analytics and AI/ML capabilities and integration to a number of supplementary leading business and technology SaaS platforms.

With experience in working with both Scrum and/or Kanban methodologies you’ll thrive in a feature led working environment with day to day interaction with a cross functional team involving user experience, visual and interactive design, strategy, frontend engineering and other subject matter experts.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Expressing your creativity by writing brilliant code to power the Snoop analytics platform
  • Developing and designing solutions for new data features and data pipelines
  • Support, maintenance and continual improvement of existing data features and data pipelines
  • Recommending and implementing ways to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality
  • Ensuring the data architecture is in place that supports the requirements of our data scientists
  • Optimising the automated CI/CD pipeline
  • Writing and running unit tests
  • Writing quality documentation for the delivered features
  • Researching new technologies and techniques, running experiments and proof of concepts to keep Snoop at the forefront of modern application & analytics development

Job requirements

As a successful applicant for this role, you’ll have:

  • Engineering
    • Expert knowledge of AWS services, and in particular RDS, S3, Lambda, Kinesis, AWS Batch
    • Expert knowledge of SQL language and relational database technologies
    • Expert knowledge of ETL/ELT and data ingestion pipelines
    • Strong knowledge of Python
    • Experience of no-SQL database technologies
    • Experience in designing and architecting solutions and data models
    • Experience in performance and scalability optimisation
    • Experience evaluating how different technologies and frameworks can be used in order to deliver the best possible solutions
  • Quality
    • Dislikes of hacks, preferring to write clean code over quick fixes
    • Habit of documenting your code and knowledge
    • Strong emphasis on reusability best practices and structured code
    • Taking pride in the work you produce
  • Process
    • Experience working with cross functional teams
    • Experience in working with agile methodologies in Kanban and/or Scrum
    • Ability to work in a feature team environment
    • Good time management and prioritisation skills
    • Ability to break complex problems into smaller tasks
    • Experience in task estimation

We of course want you to have the right credentials and experience for the job, but crucially we want to see a thirst for learning and an entrepreneurial spirit. Working in a start-up is a lot of fun and incredibly fulfilling; but it is hard work and without the support and infrastructure that exists in big business. You must be able to thrive in this environment. And whilst you are here to get a job done, we would love you not to feel constrained by your role and get involved where you can, to make Snoop a success.

Please note, all successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory credit and criminal records check as part of our recruitment process.
